The freedom day/inauguration celebrations are winding down and what a day it’s been. Ten years to celebrate on. Ten years of memories.
I remember the dark days of the 1980’s and tearfully believing that South Africa would never shake off the shackles of apartheid and stand tall in the world of nations.
I remember that day in February 1990 when FW de Klerk unbanned the ANC and other political organisation and announced that Mandela would be freed.
I remember just nine days later when Mandela walked free and Tutu introduced him to a delirious crowd at the grand parade in Cape Town.
I remember voting in 1994 and then the inauguration of Mandela on 10 May of that year.
I remember seeing my countries new flag for the first time.
I remember singing my countries national anthem for the first time.
I remember it all.
It is awesome to be South African.
